8 Things You Didn’t Know About Composting
1 - We've been composting for 12,000 years!
Archaeological evidence suggests that composting has been in progress since Neolithic times.
2 - You can compost your hair and your nails!
They are a great source of protein (keratin) with some calcium, sodium and magnesium.
3 - You can also compost dead rats, mice and pest animals you're getting from your traps!
They actually activate the compost pile, speed up the process and give you compost fast!
4 - A compost pile doesn't smell bad!
(Or you've been doing something wrong!) It can have a 'sweet'/earthy smell...
5 - “Compostable” packaging is not the solution!
The "commercially compostable" label is not great. Why? Because even if it is compostable in industrial facilities, it doesn't bring much value to the compost and it still uses a lot of resources! The best thing to do is still to bring your reusable cups and containers!
We also don’t have a composting facility in Taranaki… Compostable items are sent to Waikato or Foxton…
6 - Composting can break down TNT, and its derivatives (RDX, and HMX)
And the US Army is using it!
7 - A (hot)compost pile can reach over 60+ degrees Celsius in a few days!
A large volume is required so won't work in small home compost systems
8 - About 35% of NPDC households' rubbish in landfill bins is compostable.
10% is from the garden and 25% is from the kitchen! This is a LOT of savings that could be done and a lot of "waste" that could be turned into great compost! (Source: NPDC)
