Down to Earth July Sustainable Business Champion

Written by Brittany Ryan

Those who grew up locally might recall as children refilling their jars with golden syrup – a fond memory of a time past and what families used to do.

Refilling our household products is not a new concept, and it’s one that is emerging more widely not only in Taranaki but around the world. It’s cheaper in the long run, saves on packaging, and creates a more fulfilling shopping experience.

For those who wish to reignite the old ways and transition to a slower form of living, read on to discover Down to Earth Organics and the steps, new owners Lisa and Lee, are taking to bring innovative, healthy, and environmentally friendly products to our region. Prioritising minimalistic packaging, plant-based, organic, and locally sourced food and household items as well as offering a refillery station, Down to Earth Organics creates a shopping experience that caters to our families, professionals, and anyone wanting a little more from their routine shopping trips.

The store atmosphere is uplifting. Customers embrace, big smiles and laughter by the door, as we peruse the aisles. Checking out the brand-new products to hit the shelves, Lisa says, “This line is really great,” as she picks up a cotton bag with built-in pockets for refillable jars. CaliWoods founded by Shay, a west coast kiwi trying to inspire more sustainable changes, offers reusable travel items such as tumblers, stainless steel straws, and cutlery.

Aesthetically displayed products are thoroughly researched and sourced specifically for customers to discover and add to their evoked set of shopping items. Find toiletries like Everkind, a deodorant made by a mother from Inglewood, Amanda-Jane Healy whose mission is to offer “body care that’s people kind, planet kind, and body kind.”

In addition to the amazing range and evolving product offering, Down to Earth Organics creates a unique and memorable shopping experience. Family bonding is one of the most significant reasons to slow down and take a walk through the store. There is even a basket of toys for the little ones, and there is always a health food specialist or naturopath to offer assistance around the corner.

The progressive store is also incenting bulk buying by offering a lower price for using the refill options. Bring your own containers, tare at the counter, and refill. No single-use packaging is necessary! Find everything from your favourite brand of coffee beans to organic popping corn for a fun evening treat with the kids.

Supporting stores like Down to Earth Organics patronises local, ethical and environmentally friendly brands. It also promotes food security, supports the growth of ethical companies paying fair wages, and product diversity for our region. Less packaging means less waste and less tax dollars on recycling. If nothing else, a more exciting shopping experience is just on the fringe of our New Plymouth CBD.
