Flying High Project comes to Taranaki
Flying High New Plymouth
Taranaki was arguably the most unique in its way of celebrating this year’s Earth Day. Yes, we brought a hot air balloon to the raceway for kids and their families to ask questions, learn, and ooh and ahh.
Gathering from near and far at the sight of a hot air balloon in the twilight glow proved to be a magnificent way to bring together our community and share in a learning experience that centers around sustainability and the importance of environmentally restorative innovation for future generations.
Aeronaut, Andrew Parker and his world tours are “lifting kids’ aspirations for stronger, sustainable communities,” and his aim is to inspire students to reach for their dreams by providing an introduction and pathway to living more sustainably. Energy, transport, waste, sustainable living, and sustainable communities are just some of the themes that were discussed at the event. Organisations represented included, Sustainable Taranaki, Para Kore, Volunteer NP, Enviroschools, The Junction – Zero Waste Hub, and Ngā Motu Marine reserve.
There were 10 students who entered a photo competition to show how they care for the environment and were given the opportunity to ride in the balloon. Submissions included everything from upcycling plastic, keeping our parks tidy, creating homemade non-toxic cleaners, and rat trapping.
