June Sustainable Business Champion - The Dressing Room

Slow Fashion - The Trend is Here in Taranaki!

We interviewed Sha, Yvette, and Kerry from The Dressing Room on Devon Street in New Plymouth, and they gave us the inside scoop on slow fashion. Many people are surprised to learn that the fashion industry is second to oil and gas when it comes to pollution, and microfibres from synthetic clothes are at the source of this issue. Not to mention the transit of goods overseas, packaging when ordering online, and the crops and labour involved are not typically ethically sourced. Read more about the importance of slow fashion in What’s in Your Wardrobe.

The Dressing Room was selected as our local sustainable business champion because they sell quality and designer pre-loved fashion as well as carry ethical brands that sell natural fibers, mainly cotton, linen, and silk.

Ethical And Sustainable Brands:

The Interview:

What is your point of difference at the Dressing Room?
One-on-one service, actually listening to clients and making suggestions —

All of our new clothing is exclusive to our store - no one else in town stocks it. We are also the only store in town to offer designer pre-loved clothing on consignment.

We have designer clothes with brand new tags on, never been worn which you can purchase for a fraction of the price. Not to mention, shopping with us helps to reduce landfill waste, and our new clothing focuses on natural fibres from renewable sustainable sources.

What are some common questions customers ask when they enter your store?

Customers are constantly surprised that our pre-loved items are not new as we take care to only accept on consignment quality pre-loved clothing, shoes, handbags and jewelry.

Are you finding some shifting trends in consumer behaviour?

People are more thoughtful with what they are purchasing and are looking to incorporate their purchases into their existing wardrobe. Currently, we are getting a lot of out of town visitors as people get out and explore our country.

What is your store's vision?
• Provide excellent customer service and experience with beautiful natural fibre clothing and high-end pre-loved items
• Confidently styling individuality

Where do you see your yourself in 5 years?
Further growing our business and client base as well as expanding our new clothing range to compliment our pre-loved items. We also wish to drive more traffic through our website. We also hope to offer appointment only 1 on 1 styling sessions.
