Business Champion - Baby Addictions

Did you know a disposable nappy contains a cup of crude oil that takes 550 years to break down? And a baby averages 6000 nappies before they are toilet trained? This motivated Kendell Terrill to start her local business that protects the environment and supports whānau.

New Plymouth Mum Kendell knew it would be hard work when she started Baby Addictions but has never looked back.

“When my daughter was born, I couldn’t find the right fit for reusable cloth nappies that cost an arm and a leg! So I started looking around to see what brands were out there?”

Selling affordable cloth nappies while reducing the use of disposable nappies, gave Kendell the idea to start a nappy laundry service. The switch to cloth nappies has paid off saving Kendell $5000.

Kendell was approached by New Plymouth’s Puddleducks Nursery & Preschool who wanted to switch to cloth nappies but didn’t have the time to wash them.

I realised if I took care of the washing, then day-cares have one less thing to worry about.”

Since July last year, the day-care has stopped more than 9,000 nappies from polluting landfill. Puddleduck’s Manager Kathryn Godfrey said the preschool uses cloth nappies as it values our community and the region’s environment.
