Cafe Green Door - A Few Step Ahead

A vessel to help both our circle and our community.

The team at Cafe Green Door have been doing it right for a long time, and we’d like to give them a big pat on the back for their community building efforts, local, organic, and fair-trade best practices, and their ingenuity around sustainable initiatives. Incentives for BYO cups, a collection point for old dental products via Colgate, and a hub for making new connections and learning Māori, this Cafe is not only in one of the best spots of our CBD, it also has tasty, healthy food options with a strong community-centric ethos to boot.

So why are they a few steps ahead? They switched to stainless steel straws before it was on trend for starters. Not to mention they’ve always offered, arguably, the best vegan cabinet food in Taranaki. Their vegetable delivery guy even recycles his boxes from week to week, and they provide incentives for customers to bring their own cups with a library of mugs and a .50 cent discount. Not to mention they have a free water refill and recycling station. The water refill station was initiated by the students from Moturoa School, and this was the first refill cafe in Taranaki.

It is clear their owners, Teri and Ron, prioritize initiatives that help the community, and in the past Ron has supported the Taranaki Retreat with a haircut in 2016, and in 2018 they played “A silly game for Sarah” which was a collection to support a customer who was fighting a battle with cancer.

They also host fun events such as the Koru Project which has recruited the local talent of Taranaki’s finest creatives to paint, build, dip, dye and generally embellish in their own style, a concrete face ornament. These ornaments were then auctioned online to raise money for a local charity, Autism Connex.
