Sustainable Backyards - The Green Shed Farm Shop

Lillian Hall is as resourceful as it gets – even her chicken feed sacks don’t go to waste.

“There’s a lot of hungry fowls to feed so I started making shopping bags out of the sacks as the plastic is strong and long-lasting,” smiles Lillian.

The bags became such a local icon that Urenui School commissioned  Lillian to make a swim bag for every tamariki-child.

“I love using up everything so it made sense to turn the sacks into bags for people to enjoy.”

Lillian sells her bags for $4 each along with vegetables, eggs, homemade herbal teas, baking, chutneys & jams in her shop at her Main North Road property in Urenui.

“I opened the shop 13 years ago after my husband Colin and I moved to Taranaki for a fresh start. I just love making my own products.”

Lillian grows 30 different herbs that she makes tea out of. If you visit her shop, the first cup is free and goes perfect with a fresh-baked scone or herbal shortcake.

“I love talking with people and keeping busy. People ask where do I get all the time from,” she laughs.
